A 30-year-old Rochester man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for strangling his girlfriend during an argument over his drug use.
Peter Viana wept Wednesday during his sentencing in Monroe County Court for the Aug. 17, 2010 killing of 27-year-old Tammy Ouweleen.
Police called to her home to investigate a report of an unresponsive female found Ouweleen on her bed, with Viana sleeping next to her.
Viana told police he strangled her with a belt as they argued over his use of heroin and cocaine. He said he then passed out after doing drugs.
Viana was charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty in January to manslaughter. Prosecutors say the plea was made with the consent of Ouweleen’s family.
