NYS Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics
Published Author
Book Signing — Announcements
Opinion 11-04
Background: A judge asked whether he may advise his undergraduate and law school classmates, on judicial stationary, that a novel he has written was recently published. In addition, the judge asked whether it would be permissible to participate in a local bar association’s “author of the night/book signing.”
Opinion: The committee stated that it is ethically permissible to advise people of his book’s publication, however, he cannot use official stationary. In addition, the judge may participate in the book signing, so long as he does not comment on any pending cases.
