NYS Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics
Fundraising Activities
Opinion 11-32
Background: A judge asked whether it was ethically permissible to serve as a president or administrative co-chair of a bar association’s foundation. The purpose of the foundation was to award scholarships to female law students in order to advance the status of women in the legal profession.
Opinion: The committee stated that it is permissible for a judge to hold such a position so long as the judge is not directly participating in the solicitation of funds or other fund-raising activities.
