Erie Canal opening early in some parts

The New York State Thruway Authority will open up the Erie Canal about one week ahead of schedule so Western New York berry farmers have enough water to irrigate their crops and prevent further cold weather-induced damage.

Berry farmers have struggled in recent weeks after warm weather accelerated their crops blooming time, only to have exposed berries frozen and damaged when temperatures dropped back to more seasonal levels.

U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, who urged the Thruway Authority to open the canal ahead of schedule, confirmed it will open on April 15 or 16, one week ahead of schedule.

I boat on the canal, when it opens May1st, there certainly is not a lot of boats, and that is why the short hours until Memorial Day. Why open early? The berry farmers need the water, and the canal does not have to be open for that

Why open early? Just fill with water.
