The Democratic Caucus of the Monroe County Legislature on Thursday called for a reduction in the size of the Legislature, claiming it would save taxpayers more than $1 million in the first two years.
The proposal calls for reducing the body from 29 members to 15 as part of this year’s redistricting process. A release from the caucus states counties of similar size to Monroe — Erie, Westchester, Suffolk, Onondaga and Nassau — seat from 15 to 19 members.
About 25,000 people reside in each district in Monroe County, whereas the proposal calls for that figure to be about 50,000.
Any such measure faces voter approval.
