NEW YORK CITY — The questions on the ads aren’t subtle: Leaving Islam? Fatwa on your head? Is your family threatening you?
A conservative activist and the organizations she leads have paid several thousand dollars for the ads to run on at least 30 city buses for a month.
Pamela Geller says the purpose behind the ads is religious freedom. She says they’re only aimed at Muslims who are already contemplating leaving the faith.
Faiza Ali of the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations says the ads are a smokescreen for an anti-Muslim agenda.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the ads don’t violate any of its guidelines. They went up May 14 and are scheduled to come down in a couple of weeks.
There are about 6,000 buses in the MTA’s fleet.
