The New York Bar Foundation has established The Real Property Law Section Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship with a gift of $10,000 from the Real Property Law Section.
The scholarship was created to honor the memory of former community leader and attorney, Lorraine Power Tharp, who previously served as NYSBA president (2002-2003) and as chairwoman of the Real Property Law Section. Tharp died in 2008.
A release from the NYSBA states the annual scholarship, valued at $1,500, will be awarded to a second- or third-year law student who best exemplifies Tharp’s core values — academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in public service, high integrity and, if possible, an interest in real property law.
The deadline for submission of applications for this year’s scholarship is Sept. 30.Guidelines and an application can be accessed at www.tnybf.org or by calling (518) 487-5651.
Elected in 1994 to membership in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, Tharp was a fellow, director and treasurer of The New York Bar Foundation and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She also was a member of the ABA, where she served as a delegate to the ABA House of Delegates, and a member of the Albany County and Saratoga County bar associations.
The New York Bar Foundation welcomes contributions to the scholarship — send a check payable to The New York Bar Foundation, 1 Elk St., Albany, N.Y. 12207 or visit www.tnybf.org.
