BUFFALO — Erie County will take several steps to prevent inmate suicides at two facilities under a settlement agreement reached with the U.S. Justice Department.
The government sued the county last year over conditions at the Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo and the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden. Eight inmates have killed themselves at the Buffalo jail since 2005, three of them after the suit was filed.
The agreement announced Friday outlines a series of measures addressing the suicide piece of the lawsuit. They include training the staff in suicide prevention and detoxification, improving inmate screening and providing safe housing.
Issues of medical and mental health care, violence, sexual misconduct and health and safety remain outstanding.
