U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., of Fairport, is backing legislation aimed at increasing transparency when it comes to corporate funding for political campaigns.
In a release issued Thursday, she said the DISCLOSE Bill would mandate full disclosure of corporate funding sources and limit the role foreign entities play in paying for domestic campaign advertising. The legislation passed the full House and was sent to the Senate for its approval.
“I really regret that we have to take this step,” Slaughter said in the release. “I wish we hadn’t been handed this issue but the court ruling [in Citizens United] did not leave us any good choices. … This bill puts smart limits on the role that foreign companies can play in American politics.”
