The New York State Legislature this week passed the first law in the country regulating employment of nannies, housekeepers, caregivers for the elderly and other domestic workers.
The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights creates basic standards for domestic employees including minimum wage, a standardized work week, one day off per week, three paid sick days per year, overtime and protection against discrimination.
Gov. David A. Paterson has said he intends to sign the bill into law.
California and Colorado are considering similar measures.
