Ontario County assistant public defender honored

Leanne Lapp, first assistant public defender for the Ontario County Office of the Public Defender, has been named recipient of the 2010 Kevin M. Andersen Memorial Award, to be presented July 26 at the New York State Defenders Association’s annual meeting in Saratoga Springs.

Named in honor of the late Kevin M. Andersen, a long-time public defender dedicated to his work, the award is presented to one New York attorney annually who has practiced in the area of indigent defense for less than 15 years and exemplifies the sense of justice, determination and compassion Andersen possessed. The award was created in 2004, following his death.

Lapp was nominated for the award by Ontario County Public Defender Thomas J. Kidera.  Lapp joined Kidera’s office in January after 10 years with the Monroe County Office of the Public Defender, where she spent her final year as a special assistant, serving as a senior felony trial lawyer with a full caseload, and as the supervisor and mentor for the felony trial staff.

Lapp lives in Farmington and is a 1998 alumna of the University at Buffalo Law School, where she was an editor of the Public Interest Law Journal. She began her public defense career in 1999 in Monroe County.
