Swedish Hill captures state wine trophy

Listen to this articleBUFFALO — A $17 sparkling wine produced by Swedish Hill Winery in the Finger Lakes region has captured New York’s most coveted wine trophy.
The medium-dry, non-vintage Riesling Cuvee from the 24-year-old winery near Cayuga Lake’s western shore beat out a record 850 wine entries Tuesday to win the Governor’s Cup silver chalice. The annual contest showcases the state’s top reds, whites and bubbly.
For the second straight year, the Winery of the Year award went to Sheldrake Point Vineyard, which overlooks Cayuga Lake nearly 10 miles south of Swedish Hill’s vineyards in the town of Seneca Falls.
Swedish Hill, owned by the Peterson family, captured both the Governor’s Cup and Winery of the Year title in 2008.
