NYS OK’s grants for Lake Ontario dredging plan

ALBION — New York state has approved a $35,000 grant to update a dredging plan for Lake Ontario harbors in five counties.

The funding will go toward a regional dredging plan in Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne and Oswego counties.

The Daily News of Batavia reports that Orleans County is taking the lead in the grant and in preparing the study. County officials tell the newspaper that the funding will pay for a consultant to study each harbor and craft a plan for ensuring the waterways are dredged on a regular schedule.

In Orleans County, officials say the harbor at Oak Orchard is critical to the county’s $12 million annual fishing industry.

The Great Lakes Small Harbors Coalition is seeking federal funding to keep the harbors dredged.
