New lawyers being sworn in

The next class of candidates of Fourth Department attorneys and counselors at law includes 279 who will be sworn March 3.

The Appellate Division, Fourth Department’s bar admission ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Rochester, 125 E. Main St.

The Fourth Department, presided over by Justice Henry J. Scudder, admits new attorneys at special sessions of court twice annually during its February/March and June terms. Candidates have been certified for admission following careful investigation of their character and fitness to practice law by committees appointed by the court.

The candidates are required to recite the constitutional oath of office and subscribe to it by signing the official roll of attorneys.

“The men and women who will be sworn in should be proud of their many accomplishments,” Justice Scudder said. “They have completed the rigorous demands of law school, passed the bar exam and have been found to be of good moral character. This will be a memorable day, not only for the new lawyers, but also for their family and friends who support them along the way.”

Speaker for the event will be Vincent E. Doyle III, president-elect of the New York State Bar Association. Doyle, who will take office in June, is a partner at Connors & Vilardo LLP in Buffalo.

The four appellate divisions, which hear and decide appeals from the trial courts, have exclusive jurisdiction over the admission of new candidates to the bar.
