BUFFALO — Upstate New York Republican leaders have endorsed a Buffalo-area assemblywoman for fallen U.S. Rep. Chris Lee’s seat.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet to schedule a special election for the unexpected vacancy in the 26th District. The married Lee abruptly resigned two weeks ago after a gossip website published a shirtless cell phone photo he sent to a woman he’d been flirting with on Craigslist.
Getting the unanimous nod from the Republican leaders in the district’s seven western New York counties late Monday was Clarence Republican Jane Corwin. Erie County Chairman Nicholas Langworthy says 15 candidates were considered. He says Corwin’s conservative voting record and her philosophy of lowering taxes and shrinking government set her apart.
Democrats have yet to announce a candidate for the district traditionally held by Republicans.
