Men admit to helping illegal immigrant

Avtar Singh Grewal, 50, and Gerard James Hill, 50, both of Liverpool, have pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy to misdemeanor charges of bringing an illegal immigrant to the United States without authorization.

The crime carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of $100,000 or both.

Assistant U.S. Attorney MaryEllen Kresse said that from April 2007 to February 2008, Grewal and Hill agreed to help a citizen of India enter and remain in the United States.

Specifically, Hill, a United States citizen, agreed to falsely represent to government officials that he and the Indian citizen were legally married so that the illegal immigrant could obtain entry to the United States.

Sentencing for Hill and Grewal is scheduled for May 19.
