The board of trustees for the newly formed Discovery Charter School has appointed Joseph L. Saia of Webster as school director to oversee the launch of the new elementary charter school on the Bishop Kearney High School campus.
Saia has experience in elementary education and Expeditionary Learning, a core focus for Discovery. He has served at The Children’s School in Rochester since 1997.
Since 2007 he has been an academic intervention services specialist and coach following a decade of work in the classroom coordinating instruction across grade levels.
Saia also taught at Genesee Community Charter School where he embraced the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound design, which mirrors the curriculum focus and philosophy of Discovery.
DCS will open admission to 120 children in kindergarten through second grade for the 2011-12 school year. One grade per year will be added until reaching capacity of 280 students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Students who are eligible for federal free or reduced-price lunches will have preference.
The deadline to apply is March 31. A lottery will be held April 1 to select the students who will be admitted. More information is available at www.RochesterDiscovery.com or by calling the school at (585) 342-4032.
