Investigators say two inmates cut through a metal bar in their cell window and escaped from a county jail in Rochester, triggering a nationwide hunt.
The pair, being held on felony charges, smashed the window Thursday night, hung from the sill and dropped about a dozen feet to the ground. They were then seen on surveillance tapes running away from the Monroe County Jail. It was the first breakout there since 1996.
Police identified them as 34-year-old Joseph Lee Mitchell, who’s facing a federal cocaine conspiracy charge, and 35-year-old Eddie Palmer, who’s charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
Both men have relatives in other regions of the country. Police said various sightings have already been reported but provided no details.
