U of R professor arrested in fatal hit-and-run

A university professor has been charged in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Rochester.

Rochester Police tell local media that 42-year-old Benjamin Smith left the scene of a crash near Strong Memorial Hospital that fatally injured a 21-year-old man, Raymond Arnold.

They say he ran a red right and crashed into Arnold’s SUV early Sunday. Arnold was pinned under his overturned vehicle and later died at the hospital.

Smith is an assistant professor and researcher specializing in childhood behavior at the nearby University of Rochester School of Medicine.

He pleaded not guilty Monday to leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a felony, and was ordered held on $10,000 bond.

Police say it isn’t known if alcohol was a factor. They say investigators found evidence from Smith’s damaged car at the scene, including a license plate.
