Governor directs flags flown at half staff

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half staff on Friday in honor of Army Sgt. Michael S. Lammerts, a 26-year-old Tonawanda resident who died in Afghanistan on April 4.

Lammerts was assigned to 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Baumholder, Germany. He died of wounds from small arms fire in Faryab Province, Afghanistan.

Lammerts had been in Afghanistan for about a month. He had served two tours of duty in Iraq. Survivors include his wife, Melissa, and their 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son.

Also killed in the attack was 32-year-old Sgt. Scott Burgess of Texas.
