WNY farmers can get federal aid for freeze losses

LYONS — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Wayne County as a natural disaster area due to losses caused by a freeze and extreme cold that occurred Jan. 22.

Farmers in the surrounding counties of Cayuga, Monroe, Ontario and Seneca are also eligible for the aid.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the severe weather caused significant losses to grapes.

Qualified farm operators in the designated areas are eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency to help cover their losses.
