Rain-interrupted Rochester Lilac Festival resumes

Rochester’s annual Lilac Festival has resumed after being canceled by rain for three consecutive days.

The festival is on Wednesday, a day after rain and 40-degree temperatures forced the cancellation of the Flower City’s signature event for the third straight day. Before Monday, the festival had never been canceled for consecutive days since it expanded into a multi-day celebration in the mid-1970s.

The event opened in Highland Park on Friday and runs through Sunday. Activities include garden tours and free concerts. The festival features 500 varieties of lilac in the park.

Festival organizers say the rainy weather isn’t keeping out-of-town bus tours from bringing visitors to see the lilacs.

More showers are forecast for Wednesday, with periods of rain likely Thursday and Friday as temperatures climb into the 60s.
