BERGEN — Sen. Charles Schumer plans to be in western New York to call on federal, state and private transportation entities to complete a plan for constructing a high-speed rail line linking Albany and Buffalo.
Schumer had a news conference Tuesday afternoon in Bergen in Genesee County, where a proposed 11-mile stretch of new tracks would link with neighboring Monroe County and the Amtrak station in Rochester. The new track would be used to test high-speed trains.
The proposal is part of an overall effort to build a 300-mile high-speed rail corridor linking western New York and Albany.
Amtrak passenger trains currently share the two existing east-west rail lines with CSX freight trains, causing delays for Amtrak customers. New York lawmakers and state transportation officials want to build a third set of tracks for Amtrak trains.
