NEW YORK — The Bronx court system’s huge backlog means some accused felons wait as long as five years to have their cases heard.
The Daily News reports that prosecutors and defense lawyers place much of the blame for the backlog on the 2004 merger of the Bronx Criminal Court with the borough’s Supreme Court.
Then-state Chief Judge Judith Kaye believed the merger would relieve a backlog of misdemeanors by putting them before Supreme Court justices who were between trials.
Last year court administrators began dismantling the merger by assigning felony and misdemeanor cases to different judges.
