Schumer seeks fed funds for street conversion

U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer was in Rochester on Monday to talk about getting federal aid to convert St. Paul Street and North Clinton Avenue to two-way streets.

He is urging the Federal Transit Administration to award $562,500 to the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority, which the city will match, to move forward with a $1.1 million construction project to convert the streets by 2014, in time to better connect with Rochester’s new downtown bus station.

Schumer has helped secure more than $10 million for the bus station to be built starting this summer, and highlighted that having two-way traffic on both St. Paul and North Clinton, between Main Street and the Inner Loop, would complement that project and the city’s transit system as a whole.

In addition, Schumer said the project would help pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and transit users gain safer access to downtown businesses, storefronts and restaurants.
