Former Buffalo lawmaker gets prison for stealing

BUFFALO — A former Buffalo city council member has been sentenced to a year in jail for stealing $48,000 meant to help the district he represented.

Brian Davis was sentenced Wednesday in federal court, where he said he was sorry for his actions.

Authorities say Davis funneled city funds meant for the Ellicott District through not-for-profit agencies and back to himself. Davis took office in January 2002 and resigned from the council in November 2009 after admitting he spent campaign contributions for his own use.

Davis could have received up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing from an organization receiving federal funds.

He must repay the $48,000 as part of his plea agreement.
