Man accused of multiple rapes pleads not guilty

A Rochester man has pleaded not guilty to rape charges stemming from attacks police say he committed while free on bail from a previous arrest for multiple rapes.

Local media outlets report that 25-year-old Michael Chess pleaded not guilty Wednesday in state Supreme Court to charges that include rape and robbery. Police say he attacked four women, raping two of them, while out on bail for allegedly raping three women in 2011. Authorities say he met those women through a website whose posts include escort services.

He was charged with three separate counts of rape and robbery in the earlier attacks. His trial for those charges ended Sept. 27 in a mistrial.

Chess is being held in the Monroe County Jail without bail. He’s due back in court in February.
