Mayor greets home builders

Mayor Thomas S. Richards on Tuesday thanked a group of volunteers donating their time and skills to make free home repairs for residents in need.

The work is part of the Flower City Work Camp, which continues through Friday. The camp is a faith-based organization comprising more than 40 churches throughout Monroe County.

In operation since 1989, more than 500 youth and 200 adults are spending part of their spring recess this year making repairs to 59 homes in the city. Each project is led by a “worksite leader,” a highly qualified, skilled adult who leads the youth in doing interior and exterior work such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, flooring, cleaning, drywall, demolition, replacing doors, cabinets, windows and more.

“It’s a wonderful thing to see so many volunteers committed to improving helping those in need and improving quality of life in the city.” Richards said.

The city supports the camp by helping to select qualified homeowners for the program and by providing services such as smoke detector inspections and extra trash removal at the work sites.
