Harris retiring from The Legal Aid Society

Attorney Alan S. Harris, long-time CEO of the Legal Aid Society of Rochester, will retire in November, the board of directors has announced.

Harris has been an attorney with the Legal Aid Society for 33 years and its CEO since 1990.

“Alan has managed the Legal Aid Society with a steady hand and is poised to leave the agency on a sound financial footing and with a great reputation,” said board President José Cruz, who attributed Harris’ development and retention of quality personnel for what is expected to be a “smooth and seamless” transition for the next generation of upper management.

In a separate action, the board selected attorney Carla M. Palumbo to succeed Harris as president and CEO.

She was recently appointed chief operating officer and has been with the agency for 29 years. Prior to her recent appointment, she served as director of the Civil Division since 1999.
