Mayor endorsed by state pride agenda

Rochester Mayor Thomas S. Richards has received the endorsement of Empire State Pride Agenda, New York state’s largest LGBT civil rights and advocacy group.

The endorsement came last week as the city kicked off its annual Pride Week celebration.

“Rochester has a well-deserved reputation as being one of our nation’s most progressive cities,” Richards said. “In that tradition, we have worked to ensure that city government is doing everything it can to provide for the equal protection of all Rochesterians, regardless of their race, sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.”

Upon being elected in 2011, Richards, a longtime supporter of LGBT issues almost immediately emerged as one of the key local leaders in the push for marriage equality in New York state and presided over the city’s first same-sex marriage at City Hall.

“The Pride Agenda is proud to endorse Mayor Tom Richards,” said Empire State Pride Agenda Deputy Executive Director Lynn Faria. “Mayor Richards has consistently shown his support for LGBT equality and we will continue to look to Rochester to help lead the way on the issues that matter most to the LGBT community.”
