Alternatives for Battered Women Inc. will host its seventh annual “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” fundraiser and awareness event on Saturday.
Men, women and children will walk a one-mile loop around Ontario Beach Park in her shoes — any style of women’s shoe, with high heels being the most popular — to raise awareness and funds for ABW.
The event will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Beachfront Shelter at Ontario Beach Park. Thirty teams have signed up so far, including local leaders. Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard plans to attend and has issued a challenge to all police chiefs in Monroe County to walk a mile in heels. Sen. Joe Robach is also slated to attend.
Participants will also enjoy entertainment from Fickle 93.3 radio’s Dino Kay and a photo booth. ABW will raffle off prizes. Registration is $20 per person, kids under 12 are free. To register, visit www.abwrochester.org.
According to the organization, one in four women and one in seven men are affected by domestic violence. ABW is the only licensed provider of shelter and services for victims and survivors of domestic violence in Monroe County.
