A community forum on Proposition 1, proposing additional casinos in New York, will be hosted Monday by the League of Women Voters of the Rochester Metropolitan Area and the Interfaith Alliance of Rochester.
The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Ave. The league will moderate.
Speaking in favor of the proposal will be Jim Bertolone, president of the Rochester AFL-CIO. The New York AFL-CIO is a member of the NY Jobs Now Coalition, which is promoting the economic development benefits of additional casinos.
The opposition position will be presented by David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values based in New York City, and a member of the Council on Casinos, which recently released a report entitled, “Why Casinos Matter: Thirty-One Evidence-Based Propositions from the Health and Social Sciences.”
The Council on Casinos is composed of 33 public policy practitioners from across the country. William A. Johnson Jr., the retired RIT professor of public policy and former Rochester mayor, is a member.
Opportunities will be available for audience questions. Proposition 1 will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot. The event is free and open to the public.
