ALBANY — A state judge has set a January deadline for commenting on the proposed release of sealed documents about the 1971 riot and retaking of Attica state prison in western New York.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has filed a court motion to open remaining volumes of the 1975 Meyer Commission Report in an effort to reveal the fuller history of the nation’s bloodiest prison rebellion and answer the questions of families whose loved ones died.
State Supreme Court Justice Patrick NeMoyer in Buffalo has set a Jan. 17 deadline for written submissions from those who want to be heard on the release. No hearing date has been set yet.
In all, 11 prison staff and 32 inmates died — all but four shot by troopers and guards retaking the prison.
