State trooper injured in weather-related wreck

State Trooper Leonard Kasniak was injured at about midnight Monday while assisting with a road closure on the New York State Thruway in Buffalo.

The thruway was being shut down as a result of hazardous weather conditions. Kasniak’s patrol car was struck by a car driven by Evan G. Turner, 22, of Orchard Park.

According to a release, Kasniak was in his patrol car at the time with emergency lights activated. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center for X-rays and treatment. He was expected to be hospitalized for a couple of days.

Turner was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and second-degree vehicular assault. Police said the weather appeared to be a contributing cause to the crash.
