NEXUS-NY to review applications

New Energy Xcelerator in UpState NY, a new initiative aimed at identifying and validating new clean energy technologies developed in upstate New York, has received 56 applications from clean-energy innovators.

The application period closed on Dec. 22.

“We were pleasantly surprised with the quantity and quality of applications,” said NEXUS-NY Executive Director Doug Buerkle. “We received many outstanding applications from across the state and across various technologies.”

He said the next task is to select 12 teams with high commercialization potential and which best fit the program’s overall objectives. Buerkle expects the finalists to be determined and notified by the middle to end of January.

The regional breakdown of applications received (by number and rounded percentage of the total of 56) is as follows:

• Rochester: 22 applications, 40 percent.

• Southern Tier, 12 applications, 21 percent.

• Syracuse, seven, 13 percent.

• Albany, six, 10 percent.

• Buffalo, two, 3 percent.

• North Country, one, 2 percent.

• Other, six, 10 percent.

The goal of the program — via more than $500,000 annually in financial support and various education and training sequences — is to provide support to early-stage technologies for the validation of their commercial potential. NEXUS-NY will specifically address the critical phase that occurs between discovery and commercialization.
