Judge Scheindlin receives Fuld Award

The Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association has recognized U.S. District Court Judge Shira A. Scheindlin of the Southern District of New York with its Stanley H. Fuld Award.

The award, named for the late chief judge of the state Court of Appeals, was presented on Wednesday during the bar association’s annual meeting in New York City. It is awarded by the section annually for outstanding contributions to the development of commercial law and jurisprudence in New York.

“Judge Scheindlin has shown courage and wisdom in her rulings during her 20 years on the bench,” said section Chair Gregory K. Arenson of New York City (Kaplan Fox & Kilsheimer). “She has been particularly influential in the field of electronic criminal discovery. We are pleased to present her with this award in honor of Chief Judge Fuld.”

Scheindlin was nominated to her seat on the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, serving until December 2012, when she assumed senior status.

Past recipients of the Stanley H. Fuld award include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, former state Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, former state Chief Administrative Judge Ann T. Pfau and last year’s winner, U.S. District Court Judge Jed S. Rakoff.
