Rochester City Council on Tuesday confirmed Michael L. Ciminelli as chief of the Rochester Police Department.
Ciminelli, who was selected by Mayor Lovely A. Warren, had been serving as interim chief. He replaces now-retired Chief James Sheppard.
Ciminelli, a native of the city’s 19th Ward, has worked as a city police officer, homicide investigator, various command positions and as deputy chief. He is a former chief of the Elmira Police Department as well as a former prosecutor with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
Ciminelli also served as deputy chief counsel for operational law for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
