Former mayor to receive Rotary honor

Former Rochester Mayor Thomas S. Richards will be the 77th recipient of the Rochester Rotary Award, 40 years after his father won the award.

The oldest civic award in Rochester, the Rochester Rotary Award recognizes community members who personify Rotary International’s “Service Above Self” motto.

Prior to serving as mayor, Richards served as city corporation counsel from 2006 to 2010. He is former chairman, president and CEO of RGS Energy Group, the parent company of Rochester Gas & Electric, and he served as a partner in the Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle (now Nixon Peabody) law firm.

Richards has been involved in a number of charitable and community organizations andserves on the boards of many organizations, including Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, Volunteer Legal Services Program and Rochester Area Community Foundation.

This year’s award will be presented at the Rochester Rotary Club’s luncheon on June 19 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

Richards’ father, Thomas B. Richards, was recognized with the Rochester Rotary Award in 1974. Other past recipients include Frank Gannett, Al Sigl, Joseph Wilson, Marion Folsom, Ritter Shumway, Constance Mitchell and G. Robert Witmer Jr.
