President orders disaster relief aid to NY

President Obama on Tuesday declared a major disaster in the state of New York and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas affected by severe mid-May storms and flooding.

Federal funding also is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding in several counties, including Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Herkimer, Lewis, Livingston, Ontario, Steuben and Yates.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by results of further damage assessments.
