BUFFALO (AP) — Law enforcement officials say they’ve made a Buffalo neighborhood much safer following the arrests and convictions of dozens of members of a violent street gang.
Federal prosecutors and local police officials say they’ve removed some 200 members of the 10th Street Gang from the city’s Lower West Side, the scene of more than 20 gang-related homicides in recent years.
Officials say a total of 44 gang members have been convicted for crimes that include racketeering, assaults, murder and drug trafficking. The latest convictions came Friday, when four gang members were found guilty of participating in the murders of two innocent people in 2006.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda says gangs operating in other parts of the city also are being targeted by law enforcement.
