The law firm of Harter Secrest & Emery LLP has announced the winners of its fifth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest.
The winning students, teachers and their schools are:
• Third-grade winner: Joshua Jefferson, Enrico Fermi School No. 17; teacher Nyla Saunder;
• Fourth-grade: Aivlyn A. Case, Frank Fowler Dow School No. 52; teacher Ana Milian-Holmes; and
• Fifth-grade: Ebony A. Council, Nathaniel Rochester Community School No. 3; teacher Michele Cope.
Twenty-five third, fourth and fifth-grade classrooms throughout the Rochester City School District, participated with a total of 183 essays submitted. The topic this year was to discuss what King’s quote, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend,” meant to them and what they could do to make it a reality in their lives.
Winners, selected by HSE attorneys and staff, were announced in the classrooms where each student read his or her essay, received a personal prize and $50 gift card. Teachers were given a $200 gift card for school supplies. Each winning student’s classroom will receive a $75 pizza party gift card.
“The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest is part of our firm’s ongoing commitment to diversity, along with initiatives such as our Diversity Scholarship and participation in the Diversity Clerkship Program,” said Kim Shimomura, a partner chair of the Diversity Committee. “The contest helps promote educational growth and inspire youth.”
