Canadian trucker charged in trooper death

Gary R. Blakley, 66, of Ontario, Canada, was arrested Tuesday by New York State Police in connection with a December 2013 motor-vehicle crash that claimed the life of Trooper David Cunniff.

Blakley, who was named in an indictment issued by a Madison County grand jury, is charged with several counts including aggravated criminally negligent homicide and second-degree aggravated manslaughter.

Troopers claim Blakley was the driver of a tractor trailer that struck Cunniff’s marked state police car as he was conducting a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in the Montgomery County town of Amsterdam. Blakley was interviewed on the night of the accident but was not charged.

The arrest comes after months of detailed and painstaking investigation by several state police units and outside agencies. Once indicted, it took several weeks of negotiations with Blakley and his attorney to secure his surrender at the U.S. border.

Blakley was remanded to Montgomery County Jail without bail, pending further court action.
