A historic department store in downtown Rochester will soon house high-tech business start-ups as part of an effort to revitalize the area’s economy.
State officials announced Wednesday the start of the $24 million project at the Sibley building. The sixth floor of the former department store will house offices, conference rooms and laboratories space for biotechnology start-ups and other small high-tech companies looking to expand.
The state hopes the project will lead to the creation of as many as 1,000 jobs in five years.
The rest of the building is being redeveloped into a mix of residential, office and retail space.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the project is an “important step” toward attracting high-tech industries to the region.
