Some Monroe County residents who have recently purchased a home have received a “recorded deed notice” from Record Transfer Services urging them to pay $83 for a copy of their “Current Grant Deed and Property Assessment Profile.” This is a new tactic to entice recent homeowners to pay for an unnecessary expense.

The notice indicates that the homeowner will receive a copy of the deed to their property upon payment of the $83. Record Transfer Services lists its operating office as 3835 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Suite 78, Westlake Village, California 91362, which is the location of a UPS outlet.

Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo warned in a release: “Anyone receiving a ‘RECORDED DEED NOTICE’ from Record Transfer Services should ignore and disregard the notice as it is an unscrupulous attempt to extract payment from homeowners. It is unfortunate that this company is trying to take advantage of new homeowners by asking them to pay $83for a copy of their deed and property information which is unnecessary.”

The official looking notice recommends that “all NY homeowners obtain a copy of their Current Grant Deed and Property Assessment.” Dinolfo added that residents have been calling to see if they need to comply, and her answer is “absolutely, no.”

The Clerk’s Office offers easy access to copies of deed and mortgage documents that can be obtained, at no cost, directly from the Monroe County Clerk’s website. Certified copies may be ordered online for an average cost of $5. Property records are also available for inspection, copying and certification at the County Clerk’s Office.
