City aims to give municipal workers $15

Rochester is moving to raise the minimum wage of municipal workers to $15 an hour.

Mayor Lovely Warren was joined by Gov. Andrew Cuomo when she announced the phased-in increase on Wednesday.

Last week Cuomo said his administration would gradually increase the minimum wage for all state workers to $15. He wants to pass legislation giving the same minimum to all workers in the state and says that governments can lead by example.

The Rochester proposal is subject to approval by the City Council but already has the support of the council president. Syracuse’s mayor announced a similar increase last month.

Cuomo, a Democrat, said he believes the proposed $15 minimum wage for all private- and public-sector workers will encourage efforts to raise minimum wages across the country.
