SYRACUSE — The former CEO of Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse will receive more than $2 million for his role in a whistleblower lawsuit.

Phillip Schaengold filed suit against Memorial Health University Medical Center of Savannah, Georgia after the facility fired him as its president and CEO in 2011.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports Schaengold accused Memorial of overpaying many of its doctors to reward them for referring patients for other services within the Memorial system. That’s a violation of federal anti-kickback laws.

Schaengold, who left his job at Upstate to take the job at Memorial in 2009, said in his suit that he was fired after notifying the board of the problem.
The medical center agreed to pay the federal government a total of $9.8 million to settle the suit.
