The 25-year-old Rochester man accused of plotting to carry out a terrorist attack at a Rochester bar and restaurant on New Year’s Eve made an appearance in federal court Friday morning
Federal authorities announced on the morning of Dec. 31 that they had arrested the man, Emanuel Lutchman, the previous day and charged him with attempting to provide material support to terrorists.
Officials say Lutchman wanted to prove he was worthy of joining the Islamic State group by using a machete and knives to attack people in the restaurant on New Year’s Eve. The FBI says it used paid informants to uncover the plot.
People who know Lutchman, including relatives, have described him as a panhandler with mental problems.
Lutchman’s next court appearance is Feb. 11.
