Police: Canadians arrested in grandparent scam

ALBANY — Authorities say they’ve charged four Canadian women in New York with trying to scam money from older people by claiming the victims’ grandchildren were in legal trouble.

State police say their investigators, local police and federal agents made the arrests of four women ages 29, 42, 57 and 61 from the Montreal suburb of Laval.

Police say the women targeted older people by calling or emailing and claiming their grandson has been arrested in another state and needed money quickly to pay for bail.

A second person then got on the phone, identified himself as a police officer and advised the grandparents where and how to send the cash for bail.

Troopers say the Canadian women traveled to the Albany area last week to pick up packages of money linked to the scam.
