Senator Schumer says asbestos bill would invade privacy

ALBANY — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says legislation passed in the House would expose health records of asbestos-poisoned military veterans and others suffering from it.
The New York Democrat says the Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act would require veterans sick and possibly dying from asbestos poisoning to disclose their personal information online, including work histories, health records and parts of their Social Security numbers to get compensation from companies that knowingly used the material.
He calls it an “offensive invasion of the privacy” and promised to try to block the bill in the Senate.
Schumer also cites Mesothelioma Center data showing U.S. military veterans account for nearly one-third of all legal cases from mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
The military heavily relied on asbestos in buildings and equipment.
