ALBANY — An upstate New York mayor’s proposal to consider allowing heroin users to shoot up under medical supervision has divided drug reform groups and addiction experts.
A supervised injection site is just one of several changes in drug policy that Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick is expected to formally unveil on Wednesday. Similar facilities operate in Canada and other countries as a means of reducing overdose deaths.
Ahead of the announcement, the mayor told The Associated Press that it’s time to consider new ways to address the drug problem. Advocates like the Drug Policy Alliance say injection sites, where medical professionals can intervene if a user overdoses, save lives and connect users with treatment programs.
The idea faces significant political and legal obstacles. Critics say injection sites would do little to reduce addiction.
